B Is For To Be Or Not To Be -- Quantum Mirror Alphabet Soup Fic

B IS FOR TO BE OR NOT TO BE by THOTHMES

Summary: Well, okay, for today's story it is not a butterfly beating its wings that rocks a world, it's a common fly. And you get to be a fly on the wall for a day in the life of seven year old Daniel Jackson.
Word Count:2,427
Characters: Daniel, Claire, and Melburn Jackson, Jack, Catherine Langford, Sam, and Original Characters
Era: Preshow/Stargate [the movie]/Season One and Season Two
Categories:Character Study
Author's Note: Daniel has had a tough life. Why is his heart still so warm? Why is his faith in humanity so strong? This is my answer.
Brief quotes from Stargate the movie, and The Torment of Tantalus are the work and words of the writers of those scripts. Please don't sue the pants off of me. I'm only borrowing, and I'm a slightly pudgy middle aged woman. The nekkid and pantsless look is not what you are after, I promise!

Excerpt: Marble archaeology was a fun game. Every day after breakfast, until it became stiflingly hot and his parents came to get him to eat lunch in the cooler semi-dark of one of the tombs cut into the walls of the cliffs near the dig and then nap through the worst of the day's heat, and again in the late afternoon as the heat was fading, and even after dinner, as the night grew cool, Daniel would dig slowly through his filled in hole, little grid square, by little grid square, being careful to note any changes in color or texture or color, and how far down from the string grid that marked the original surface they fell. He tried to make sure that he wrote down everything he saw right away, because if he didn't, sometimes he couldn't remember exactly how it had been.

"Archaeology is a process of destruction," his Mom had told him. "You have to be sure your records are good, because you will never be able to put it all back the way it was. In a hundred years if another archaeologist wants to know how it all was, your notebook will be the only way for him to find out."

( Click here to find out how our Daniel came to be, but almost wasn't )

comments

Kid Fic Alphabet Soup Entry

S is for Shadows and Substance by Thothmes (PG)

Summary: Parenthood is never easy, because you must parent the child in the moment, planning for the future. A look at SG-1 through their parent's eyes.
Word count: 4,501
Characters: Ronac and Teal'c, Jack and his father, Clare and Daniel Jackson, Jacob and Sam Carter
Era: Pre-Series
Categories: Kidfic, Fic, Genfic
Authors notes: No warnings, presented in birth order according to the show's internal clues about the character's ages.

Exerpt: The boy slept, small thumb hanging from the edge of his mouth, dark, soft, whisps of baby hair plastered in sweat across his brow, chubby cheeks moving as if dreaming of sucking from his mother's breast. Ronac felt a pang, a shiver of fear. He was so small. He had no prim'ta to protect him. Many young Jaffa died in the years before they came of age to receive one, as was right and proper, since only the strong should be granted the gift of long life and vibrant health that the gods gave. Ronac had been shocked on his return, when his wife had put this tiny scrap of a thing into his arms.

"He is too small!" he had gasped, and looked at his wife with disapproval. She was tall, among Jaffa women, only a few inches shorter than he himself, but she was slender. Perhaps he should not have married her for her strong character, and her ready smile. Their offspring was small and weak, and would not thrive.

( This and more to be found here )

comments

S is for Snapshots

S is for Snapshots, by Thothmes (PG 13)

Summary: The government keeps copies of everything going in and out of Homeworld and the S.G.C. Just a few random items from the archives that came across the desk of Rashida Murray as she did her 2153 C.E. PhD thesis on the early years of the Stargate program.
Word count: 4,648
Characters: Hammond, Jack, Daniel, Sam, Teal'c, Janet, Walter, Senator and Mrs. Kinsey, Sara O'Neill, Mayborne, Dr. Brightman, Orlin, Landry, Mitchell, Mrs. Struble, and Siler
Era: A little from each season. Fewer from Nine and Ten, which are rarely Earth based.
Categories: Alphabet Soup, and miscellaneous texture
Author's notes: For those of you who do not remember International Male from back in The Day, consult Wikipedia. Our household somehow ended up with catalogues from them, and I swear that's where Teal'c buys his civvies. The individual episodes that the correspondence relate to are referenced before each item.

( Story Here )

comments

Offworld Alphabet Soup - H is for Helping Hands

H IS FOR HELPING HANDS, by THOTHMES (PG)

Summary: Everyone needs a little help sometimes.
Word count: 3,366
Characters: Jack, Teal'c, Daniel, Sam, Thor, and offscreen, Hammond
Era: A long time ago in... Who am I kidding? Classic team, somewhere in the middle of their run.
Categories: team, offworld, gen (of course! This is a Soup!)
Author's notes: It seemed like such a good idea at the time. I immediately had a vivid scene in my head, all I needed was to flesh it out, elaborate if you will. I signed up with alacrity. This one had practically written itself. "Thhpppbbbbtttt!" said Muse. "This is offworld. I don't do offworld. And that scene? Won't work. Start over!"

( Story Here )

comments

In Colorado Springs two thirds of workers in the science field are women, yet the median income for women in science fields is a mere 42% of men's. No wonder Sam arrived for that briefing in Children of the Gods with a bit of a chip on her shoulder. Someone in the elevator on her trip down had let slip how much Dr. Lee was making.

It seems likely, given how late in the series it was that General Hammond threatened to fire Felger because he had such a woeful track record, at least it was not his salary that was setting her off. If Jack knew, he'd be very, very grateful. He likes his to be not only on the outside, but more importantly, still there!

comments

Time Travel Alphabet Soup - J is for Just a Little Pocket Change

Here is my contribution for today's Gen Fic Day Alphabet Soup

Title: Time Travel Alphabet Soup - J is for Just a Little Pocket Change

Season/Episode: Season 2, 1969

Warnings: Duh... it's time travel. Don't blame me if your brain ends up in a bit of a knot!

Disclaimer: No prophet, no profit, no reason to come after me. Really!

Time Travel Alphabet Soup – J is for Just a Little Pocket Change

The woods were quiet, and the fire had died down to embers. The only sound was the sound of the wind in the trees, and an occasional truck downshifting, out of sight up on the road. This particular campsite had been one of the less desirable ones because it was closer to the road, but Jack and Michael, who had picked it out, were more interested in price than communing with nature. The midnight hour had passed long ago, and the others were on the bus, asleep. Well, all except for Teal'c. He would have waited for Jenny and Michael to be sound asleep, and then risen from his pretended sleep to kel'no'reem.

Jack was not ready to sleep, not now, and not anytime soon. Some of it was the inactivity, he knew. Jenny and Michael seemed to be in no particular hurry, and he supposed that if he wanted to get in a run (in his combat boots!) they could get a later start in the morning, but they couldn't afford to miss the solar flares, and if Daniel was not able to get the location of the Stargate out of Catherine, then they would need every single second of the time between flares to try to find the thing, or they were trapped. And that would be unacceptable. Better to drive them all crazy with the restlessness that came when his energy had no other outlet, than to face the problem of what to do with Junior if they couldn't get away. Even Daniel, who seemed to show a particularly low tolerance to Jack's fidgets and drumming would choose that over an early death for Teal'c any day. Year. Time.

Man, oh man, Jack hated time travel. That was the problem, wasn't it? Time. Carter said it was like a river, with currents, eddies, and a destination. She said he shouldn't do anything to change it, that a little thing could make his home, his time, unrecognizable. There was something about butterflies and the weather too, but he didn't quite follow that one. Because he was thinking about the stuff in his pocket.

( Go here for the rest: )

comments

Alphabet Soup, O is for Ordinary Things - a tag for Beneath the Surface

Well it's Memorial Day here in the States, so the icon seemed appropriate.

Title: O is for Ordinary Things for Episode Tied Alphabet Soup

Author: Thothmes

Season: Four. The episode is Beneath the Surface.

Warnings: Nah. Oh, wait! There's talking with a mouth full. I'm the Manners Queen at my house, and that's a capital offense here. Does that count?

Disclaimer: Like the folks on the planet in Beneath the Surface, I'm just borrowing SG-1 (and a few others) and I promise I'll return them, a little cleaner. Unlike the folks of P3R-118, I let them have showers! Gekko, MGM, etc., you should thank me!

( This way to the story... )

comments

Title: C is for Coffee for On World Alphabet Soup

Author: Thothmes

Season: Any season before Season 8, excluding Season 7

Warnings: Uhhhh... make sure you don't burn your tongue?

Disclaimer: Instant human, just add coffee. Oh, you mean a disclaimer about the fic, not the author. Well, I guess then, that I feel constrained to point out that I did not keep, misuse, permanently maim, or profit from any of the characters in this story - except inasmuch as I may garner some reviews. In fact I have merely caffeinated them, and put them back more alert and ready for action, able to give their full and undivided attention to matters at hand. Oh, and I know it may be indelicate to mention this, but they may also need to take a break to avail themselves of the facilities soon...

( Story Here )

Find the rest of the entries for this Alphabet Soup Here in complete form on DW

and here, abbreviated but with links on LJ

comments

For Lolmac, I Come Bearing Crackfic

This fic is a giftie for Lolmac. A full eight months ago I told her that I could probably come up with a comment fic for this graphic of hers, and here it finally is. IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE GRAPHIC, GO IMMEDIATELY AND SEE IT. I'll wait, and if you don't you may be confused. For those who are not regular visitors to the site, please note that there is mouseover text too. Don't miss half the fun!

Title:Oh Kneel Before Your Gods

Season: Well, before season 10 when TPTB callously assassinated the Asgard without even allowing them to send their regards to their favorite, O'Neill! Late Season 5 maybe?

Spoilers: For the existence and general deportment of Thor, Nirrti, Yu, and Cronus. Oh, and a wee one for Arsenic and Old Lace. Can you find it?

Warnings: Caution, Crackfic Escaped from Comments Due to Size. SILLINESS! Eeeeee!!! It's gen unless you want to squint through your Jack/Thor, Jack/Sam, or Jack/Daniel specs, but you'll have to work it from your end, I think.

Disclaimer: I did not ingest anything that reminded me of the '70's before writing this. I have not been following any rabbits down holes, or talking to little blond girls in blue frocks and pinafores. I freely confess to having spent a few too many moments in front of sitcoms as a child [they were what the school authorities parked us in lieu of recess on rainy days], although because my mother rationed TV, I'm willing to bet I've watched less than you have...

Oh, yeah. That other thing. Don't own them, won't break them, not getting a sweet producing deal. RDA and the rest won't be delivering lines I write, and I will definitely not be able to send my final two kids off to college on the proceeds. I won't even be able to buy a single square of bubble gum.

Be very, very thankful, because if this sitcom actually became a world wide hit, America would have to spend the rest of eternity apologizing for our single-handed utter destruction of world culture.

Oh. Wait. I forgot about The Beverly Hillbillies and Petticoat Junction. And the Kardashians.

Nevermind.

( Sitting-comfortably-with-popcorn-popped-and-buttered-and-pizza ordered-Let's-watch )

********************

Enjoy!

comments

Allies Alphabet Soup - U is for Ultimately Unmoved

This is my entry for today's Allies Alphabet Soup (here in full on DW) and (here in abridged form on LJ), posted a little ahead of the go-live hour because I'm heading out to visit colleges with Middle Daughter and visit family this week.

Title: Allies Alphabet Soup - U is for Ultimately Unmoved

Season: Pre-series through Season Two, with passing mention of Season Nine and Ten events in a non-spoiler-y way.

Spoilers: The Fifth Race, One False Step, mention of the bad guy race from Seasons Nine and Ten.

Warnings: BEHIND YOU! No, just kidding. I don't really think there's anything to warn about.

Synopsis: Some allies are active participants in the ongoing struggle. Others? Not so much.

Disclaimer: I take no responsibility for Jack O'Neill's major Furling letdown if he ever finds out. Wait? That's not what you mean by disclaimer? OH ALL RIGHT! Not mine, even though I wish they were. Not stealing, just borrowing. No money changing hands. No reason to sue me and leave me destitute and out on the street in the cruelly cold Vermont winter. Please do not send me any funny white naked guys in lieu of SG-1. I have enough children, and the ones I have would get creeped out by having a bunch of them peering into their faces and poking at the things they eat. Send them to Michael Shanks instead. He can entertain and amuse them for hours with his masterful plane impression.

( Story Here: )

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Well, I'm off now to catch 3 pitiful hours of sleep before I have to get up again. I hope you enjoyed this, and if you comment and I'm not prompt to respond, it's because I'm on the road or FINALLY catching up on my sleep. Not that I'm too put out. Given the choice of getting enough sleep or getting a chance to see my grown kids and my mom's family, I'll jettison the sleep any<s>day</s>night!

comments

Advent Calendar - Day 23 - Fic

Advent Calendar - Day 23 for the advent calendar on sj_everyday

Title: Plan A Never Works

Author: Thothmes

Season: Post-Series, established relationship

Spoilers: Not really. You've been introduced to Cassie, and you know her tendency to... misplace mothers, right? You know that SG-1 isn't just the original four, right? Okay. Good to go.

Warnings: Only for the youngest. It mentions [whispering] sex, but you'd probably get more actual titillation from your average PG rated James Bond flick.

Synopsis: The best laid plans of Colonels and Generals gang aft a' gley. But don't worry, there's always Plan B. Oh, and cake. Plenty of it.

Disclaimer: [wails] What do you mean, they aren't mine and I have to give them back? But I likessss them! They're ssso pretty, and nice, and besides, I wantssss them, I doesss! You have plenty of money in your pocketses, and I'm not getting any money in mine! Yesssss, you owes me a chance to play with them, yessss you do. I makesss them happy, I doessss. I givessss them what they wantsssses!

( This way to the story, and we're walking... )

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And may all your hearts be filled with peace and joy, whatever holidays you celebrate, and wherever you gather to celebrate them!
comments
Advent Calendar - Day 12 - Fic
Advent Calendar Day 12 for the advent calendar on sj_everyday
Title: Rejoice And Be Merry, Set Sorrows Aside
Author: Thothmes
Season: Three. I’m declaring that Christmas happened after Rules of Engagement and before Forever in a Day, because otherwise the team would be rallying around Daniel, not going their separate ways.
Spoilers: The Movie, Emancipation, Seth, Crystal Skull, Cold Lazarus. Small passing things.
Warnings: Like many, Jack suffers from depression, which can be harder to bear in festive seasons. It puts you all a-jangle and out of tune with the world.
Disclaimer:The toys mentioned are not actually for sale, or at least I pray they aren’t. Stop trying to look up the price of a Slime Castle on Amazon! The names given to the children are chosen by taking list of the most popular baby names for their putative birth years, going to number 6 on the list and using that, no taste or discernment required. I own no canon characters, and I’m just borrowing them, and they won’t be harmed. It profiteth me not. The King James Bible, Dickens, and The Night Before Christmas are out of copyright as is the carol in the title, and really, the quotations from How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Stargate (the Movie) , and Emancipation are tributes. Be flattered. Nothing to litigate here. Move along. These were not the copyright violations you were looking for.
Rejoice And Be Merry, Set Sorrows Aside
( Story here )
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

comments

Alphabet Soup, C is for Cool Competence

Title: Minor Characters Alphabet Soup - C is for Cool Competence
Season: Through the end of Atlantis
Spoilers: Minor for Message in a Bottle, Divide and Conquer, 48 Hours, Orpheus, Atlantis: Enemy at the Gate, miniscule for a Homeworld Security scene from Stargate Universe. And of course, Lockdown where Dr. Brightman makes her only appearance.
Warnings: Do you know about Teal'c and tretonin? Do you know where Jack went when he left the SGC? Do you know General Hammond's ultimate fate (as mentioned in Stargate Atlantis?) Okay. I think you're good to go, although I should also mention that this is one of those fics that it was like pulling teeth to get ANYTHING down on paper, so it is not my best work, but then again, it probably doesn't read to you as being as forced as it seems to me. I'm sure you all know how that is sometimes.
Synopsis: The shy, quiet ones, who act with restraint and internalize most things can be healers too.
Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor. I don't even play one on TV, although RDA, Michael Shanks, Teryl Rothery, and Alison Down have at one time or another. I am married to one, but since I'm only borrowing the characters, and I'm not making any profit off of them, it would really be mean and probably not very legally effective to sue him for all he's got. I don't have a salary of my own, other than the hugs, kisses, and phone calls I earn by being Mom. I suppose If you sue me, I could send you some xoxoxoxox's?

( Story Here )

***************

Thanks for reading.
Tomorrow is the first day of school. This deserves fic.

Tomorrow is the first day of school here, and I am ready to celebrate. Don't get me wrong, I love my kids. I had them because I love to spend time with them, and I delight in watching how their minds work. But it's time. The Whirlwind gets up very early, and Middle Daughter stays up very late, and privacy is almost impossible to come by.

Title: Not Too Cool For School
Season: Preseries
Spoilers: If you couldn't recognize them as such, they really won't spoil you.
Synopsis: SG-1 go to their first day of school. No teamy goodness. They're too young for that yet.
Warnings: Kidfic. As a general rule I can't approve of that. It just troubles my Improbability Meter. Where does all that matter go when they shrink? Where does it come from when they regrow? Why? Why? Why? The mind boggles. This is just a journey through the Wayback Machine, without the presence of Mr. Peabody or his boy Sherman. Daniel/Sherman friendship fic might be amusing though.
Disclaimer: These aren't the characters you own, really. They're too young to be jaunting around the galaxy yet. They aren't even really fully formed at this point. Your characters are in your programs all unharmed and unchanged. I don't get any profit, not even an apple for the teacher.

( Fic here )

***************

And why am I posting a day early, and not on The Day, when I should have plenty of time for such things? Because the elementary school wants us all to go up to the school by 7:40 and participate in All Sing with our kiddies, and go into the library afterwards for a meet-and-greet to get to know the new parents. I don't mind the social aspects of it all (although I kind of hate it when they make me sing kiddie songs and dance first thing in the morning), it's the timing of the thing. They make me get up 3 hours before I am accustomed to rising in order to be there. So tomorrow I'll be a groggy, sleep-deprived, caffeine-seeking missile by 9:30 a.m. I want to do this while I'm firing on <s>all</s> at least most thrusters!

ETA OUTAKE: Original wording "Later on when Sam and Jack had been put to bed," All fixed now! Snigger.

comments

Fic: Six Times General Hammond Almost Retired Before He Did

I wrote a <s>Five</s> Six Things, which is posted here for Part 1,
her for Part 2, here for Part 3 on sg1_five_things. It was just slightly more than twice the comment length limit.

Those who want it all in one convenient chunk can read it here. In the version here, I have corrected an error and put the six times in correct chronological order. I also cleared up one word redundancy (a constant problem I need to be vigilant against as I write). On the entries at The Pentangular Gate they are in their original, more dramatically effective order, and I (gasp!) use a word twice in one sentence. You makes your pick and takes your chances, I guess. The Pentangular Gate order is the order in which they originally occurred to me, the order here is what happens when the little purse-mouthed nit-picker of an editor in my brain says "They're all in chronological order except for that one! Fix it! Fix it! Fix it NOW!" Sigh.

Title: Six Times General Hammond Almost Retired Before He Did
Seasons: One through Seven
Spoilers: Well, that would give away some of my choices.
Warnings: There is an illegal sixth thing! The rules have been bent! The boundaries have been transgressed! Civilization is imperiled! AAAAAAAAAH!
Synopsis: SG-1 seems to bring out the best and the worst in everybody, and George Hammond is no exception.
Disclaimer: If you come after me for a bit of fic in which I made no permanent alterations to the characters, which profiteth me not, except as much as I receive reviews, well then I retire - just like Jack O'Neill! Not having his stamina, I don't think I'd last a whole year before I came back though.

( Six Times General Hammond Amost Retired Before He Did )

comments

Bra'tac and the Jaffa Alphabet Soup - U is for Unspoken

Title: Bra'tac and the Jaffa Alphabet Soup - U is for Unspoken
Season: PreSeries through Post Series
Spoilers: Minor for Bloodlines and The Warrior
Warnings: Since this was written when all God-fearing betas are abed, it's unbeta'd
Synopsis: It isn't only the notes that make the music. It's also the rests.
Disclaimer: I still don't command any Jaffa, despite the fact that my kids sometimes think I'm acting like an evil overlord, nor do I own SG-1, their heirs or assigns. I borrow them, make them do my bidding, and then let them go. They'll eventually, in the fullness of time, die free, and I'll die uncompensated, monetarily speaking.

( U is for Unspoken )

********************

The entire collection of Bra'tac and the Jaffa Alphabet Soup offerings is here on Dreamwidth.

comments

Bra'tac and the Jaffa Alphabet Soup - T is for Tales

Title: Bra'tac and the Jaffa Alphabet Soup - T is for Tales
Season: PreSeries through the Early Seasons
Spoilers: Minor for The Serpent's Lair
Warnings: Bra'tac uses an insulting word. In Goa'uld.
Synopsis: Daniel is not the only one who learns about a culture through tales.
Disclaimer: I don't own any Jaffa, nor do I own SG-1. I borrow them for my amusement and the amusement of others, I treat them nicely, and put them back where I found them. It propheteth me not, except inasmuch as I treasure my reviews.

( T is for Tales )

***************

The entire collection of Bra'tac and the Jaffa Alphabet Soup offerings is here on Dreamwidth.

***************

comments

I have committed multiple SG-1 Five Things

I've posted a few fics over at sg1_five_things and I had a bit of a problem fitting the first of them all into the itsy bitsy LJ comment limits, so in order for it to be coherent, it occurs in seven comments to make up the five parts.

Title: Five Times a Member of SG-1 Got Caught Trying to Sneak Out of the Infirmary
Seasons: One, Two, and Seven
Spoilers: A line from Emancipation, Cold Lazarus, Solitudes, In the Line of Duty, Heroes
Warnings: Canon Character Death. I hate it when that happens, but what is done is done. For now. Until TPTB undo it, or someone writes a fan fic we all like so much we make it canon.
Synopsis: The first time Janet Fraiser catches a member of SG-1 sneaking out of the infirmary, and one time she doesn't.
Disclaimer: Yeah, I snuck them all out, but I did put them all back... eventually. Because they aren't mine, and I know that. No money involved, either in the story, or here at my house.

Part 1A, here
Part 1B, here
Part 2, here
Part 3A, here
Part 3B, here
Part 4, here
Part 5, here

Also I posted:

Title: Five Times SG-1 Almost Destroyed The World
Season: Anywhere you want to fit them, and Season 10
Spoilers: Unending and Tangent, minor for Fair Game
Warnings: Well, it was written in haste with distraction, so it’s not my best work, but otherwise, no.
Synopsis: Galactic exploration has its hazards. Some of them are home grown.
Disclaimer: No profit. No need to destroy me or my planet. Putting them back now.

Five Times SG-1 Almost Destroyed The World

Please look down in the comments for an explanation of how Number 3 works. I forgot that not everyone is familiar with the problem and its answer in my haste to write the bit and get it posted before the reveal. Just goes to show that post in haste, repent at leisure!

And:

Title: Five Running Jokes SG-1 Had With Themselves
Season: Any
Spoilers: Minor for Point of View
Warnings: Eeek! I cheated. One isn’t a running joke!
Synopsis: What the title say (almost).
Disclaimer: No profit. No need to destroy me or my planet. Putting them back now.

Five Running Jokes SG-1 Had With Themselves

Don't forget to look in on everyone else's offerings (links are here). There are some wonderfully clever ones.

comments

Happy Mothers Day! I bring fic.

In honor of Mother's Day here in the U.S., I bring you SG-1 as their mothers saw them.

Title: In A Mother's Eyes
Season: Pre-series
Spoilers: None
Warnings: .........Nope. Not a one.
Disclaimer: I'd adopt them all in a trice, but unfortunately, they're all the brainchildren of the producers, writers, etc., and parental rights have not been terminated. Nor am I receiving any foster care or adoption benefits.

( In A Mother's Eyes )

******************

A very happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there, and a very happy Mother's Day to all the rest of you who have or had Mothers!

I'm celebrating something else today, my 32nd wedding anniversary. Here's a story I told recently (in a comment on LJ) about why I so love this man.

We live in rural Vermont, and if we drive a bit, there's a University town within reach. My husband loves his medical practice. He loves the hard working farmers, and the small town neighbors and co-workers. He loves caring for the patients over a long period of time, getting to know them, seeing the arc of their lives, helping them through their crises, and witnessing their triumphs. When one of his patients dies, as we all do in the end, he helps console the family, and helps them understand the medical whys, and he attends the funerals. He doesn't ever want to leave here, where government works because it is on a human scale, and civility, community spirit, and consideration are the rule rather than the exception.

One day, when our two eldest were young, a professor of mine came to give a symposium over at the University. I arranged for my Beloved Husband to take some time off to watch the kids so I could attend all three days, and invited my professor home one night to eat dinner with us, see our house, our kids, and meet the dog. After the dinner which was a big success (the dog being a major, major success - she adores dogs), I drove her home.

I was a little melancholy afterwards. My husband asked me what was wrong.

"I miss academia sometimes," I said. "Sometimes I wish I could go back and get that Phd."

Without missing a beat, he immediately offered, without a moment's hesitation, to pull up roots, find a position near my college, and move down there so I could take courses and go back to school, if I wanted to do that.

My heart nearly burst with love, and my eyes filled with grateful tears.

"No," I said. "I love it here, I love our life, I stand behind the choices we made, because they were the right choices, for our family, and for me too. It's just sometimes, having grown up as a professor's daughter, having always expected to be a professor, I miss it. There's a bit of a tidal pull. Thank you for loving me so much that you'd do that without hesitation!"

"I love you. I want you to be happy," was all he said.

He gives me roots, and wings, and all the love in the world. Damn, I'm lucky!

comments

Get A Fic Written While the Kids Are Visiting? When Pigs Fly!

This story is an expanded version of my comment suggestions for the likely aftermath of tallulah_rasa's story That Thing With Feathers, here on her DW journal. Go, read. Immediately. It's short (616 words) and very amusing. I'll wait right here 'til you get back. [Those of you who don't want to be spoiled should not read my comment at the top of the second page of comments]

Back? Settled? Comfy? Good. Let's begin.

Title: A Pig's Tale
Season: Any time before Between Two Fires
Spoilers: Schrödinger's owner's name?
Warnings: Duck! The pigs are flying! Ummm... That didn't come out right. How 'bout this: Look out! Pigs! Flying!
Synopsis: The tale of a time Jack loved unwisely and too well.
Tragicomedy now with more pig!
Disclaimer: It's got a flying pig. Don't expect it to be all sensible and stuff... What?... Intellectual property rights?... Oh, yeah. I don't own the show or any of the characters. Even the pig is borrowed from tallulah_rasa

( A Pig's Tale )

comments

I've Been Five Things-ing.

Title: Five Human Customs Teal'c Does Not Understand, And One He Does
Season: None in particular, all in general.
Spoilers: The results of the Jaffa struggle for freedom revealed! Teeny-tiny one for The Fifth Man.
Warnings: Not really, unless the results of a bris are offensive.
Synopsis: Jaffa meets human. Puzzlement ensues.
Disclaimer: All fun, borrowed characters returned, fluffed, folded, and smelling fresher. No customs destroyed in the making of this fic, which is, both by necessity and design, highly non-remunerative, but plenty of fun to write.

( here at this journal )

or

Part One, here at The Pentangular Gate on LJ and also Part Two.

Enjoy.

comments

Signpost to the Fic

Just in case anyone was curious, I've posted fic over on lj, which I didn't get around to posting here, because one was written as a birthday gift for someone with an lj but not a dw account, and the others were written for sj_everyday's Advent calendar.

If you're looking for more fic I've written, here they are:

***************

Title: Chinese
Author: Thothmes
Pairing: Sam/Jack. This is for sj_everyday people!
Summary: You can run, but you can't hide, and the company is what is important, not the meal.
Season: Early. Sam's still a captain, but after Cold Lazarus
Warnings: UST. See season, above.

Story here

***************

Title: The Gift of the Magi
Author: Thothmes
Pairing: This is for sj_everyday so it's not gen, for those who care about such things.
Season: Futurefic. Ten years from now
Spoilers: Teeny-tiny ones for Abyss, Emancipation, and One False Step. That's all, I think.
Warnings: Beware the literary allusion.
Synopsis: You can't always get what you want, and if you try sometimes you find, you get what you need.

Story Here

***************

Title: The Eyes Have It

Season: Early. After First Commandment, at a minimum.

Spoilers: Stargate (the movie), Children of the Gods, First Commandment

Warnings: Well, angst for one. Whether there is s/j depends on whether you are wearing your ship!goggles today. Fig, take those off! Those are someone else's goggles. I think these are yours, they seem much more gen.

Synopsis: It's there to see, if you know how to look.

Story Here. Written as a gift for someone who wanted angst. Not fluffy.

comments

Fic and A Story From My Life

So recently a_loquita posted a lovely little (sam/jack) fiction involving ridiculous instructions, The World's Dumbest Instructions, to which I replied with a snippet of comment fic. In the replies to that the subject of warning labels came up, and that inspired this:

Title: Caution. Coffee Is Hot.
Season: While Jacob and Selmac are blended, Daniel is alive, and Jack's a Colonel
Spoilers: Uh...No!
Warnings: Nope. And Fig? It's Certified Shipfree. Maybe even FairTrade.
Synopsis: It's a universal constant, along with death and taxes.

( Caution. Coffee Is Hot. )

***************

I also have a humorous little vignette from my life to share with you all. It's a look into what makes parenting so rich, varied, and unpredictable.

( In Which The Whirlwind Gets A Record )

***************

Sorry if I may have ruined anyone's illusion that life in the country is placid and slow-paced, but come on up to Vermont and spend your tourist dollars anyway. After all, there are some 255 towns in Vermont, and only one of them contains the Whirlwind!

comments

Enough Real Life! Time for Fic!

I wrote this while Irene was still down in the Bahamas, but then it was late, and I was a bit too tired to get it posted, and then life got busy. Just a little bit of time travel, but not the kind that is all head-hurty.

Title: Summer Mornings
Seasons: Pre-series, Season Eight
Spoilers: Fishing?
Warnings: Sorry Fig. Not gen. Het. Anybody hate Charlie? Good. Then we'll proceed. PG-13 if you read between lines.
Synopsis: A bit of time travel on a summer's morning.

( Summer Mornings )

comments

For SamAntilles, A Belated Birthday Message

Last year you told me that I managed (by being a night owl by nature) to be the very first to wish you a happy birthday.

This year I may have been the last.

I wrote fic by way of apology to all the (many) people whose birthday's I'd missed, but it is posted over on lj, where most of the other recipients are hanging out.

So wander over and enjoy.

It's a series of ficlets gathered together and entitled "Bad Birthdays", and it's long enough as a whole that I broke it into two separate posts. It is a collection of less than stellar birthdays for the Stargate [SG-1] characters, starting Pre-series, and running as far as Season 7.

Introductory stuff, and "Bad Birthdays, Part 1" - here
"Bad Birthdays, Part 2" - here

For those who worry about such things, it is gen, and slightly AU, because I fudged a little on timing and dates to tell the story I wanted to tell.

comments
