Yeah, it's puzzling to me too, especially since Jack is so clearly fond of kids. I've always imagined that he'd like to get himself his own little hockey team (a center, two wingers, two d, and a goalie), although I don't see him necessarily being ambitious for an entire baseball team!

A child with Laira was not precisely canon, since we know she wanted one, but not whether she ended up with one. Quite frankly, I can't see Jack walking away from one, and not bringing it and its mother home where he can see that they are safe, even if he has some concerns about his own suitability as a father after Charlie. He's just too much of a protector to just walk away and leave his kid (or descendants) on a planet which regularly gets bombarded by deadly meteor showers. RDA has said that if Laira had a child, he's like to see O'Neill deal with having a girl, so there is that bit of a clue, but that's about it.

Fic writers have tended to handwave it as Sara had trouble conceiving, and then nearly died in childbirth, and thus could not have any more (emergency hysterectomy following haemorraging that could not be stopped, one would presume, perhaps placenta previa, where they might fear that low implantation was due to scarring higher in the uterus). This might account for the fragility of the marriage after Charlie's death, if Sara was already inclined to feel like she failed Jack in not presenting him with more kids and not being able to pull him out of his death spiral, and they'd already had some trouble communicating about the lack-of-sibling elephant in the room, especially if he favored a large family and she a small one.

There's also, I suppose, the possibility that his stay in Iraq left him incapable, and that this was not something he felt comfortable discussing with Laira on the first date. This might explain why, in spite of showing interest in Sam he never pushes things. Not only could he derail her career, which he knows is just as important to her as his is to him, but he would want her to be able to have the kids, the dog, and the picket fence that he had so enjoyed, and maybe that couldn't be with him.

Okay, so he has no canon dog, but he keeps threatening to make it canon.

Still, canon is remarkably silent and impenetrable on this, and I agree. It's frustrating!

To Know the Dark

To go in the dark with a light is to know the light.
To know the dark, go dark. Go without sight,
and find that the dark, too, blooms and sings,
and is travelled by dark feet and dark wings.

Up in the morning's no for me,
Up in the morning early;
When a' the hills are covered wi' snaw,
I'm sure it's winter fairly.
