Date: 2013-01-31 05:10 am (UTC)We have canon implication in both "Brief Candle" and "A Hundred Days" that Jack is capable of performing sexually. And Laira's pose at the end certainly signaled that she believed herself to have conceived. (And just as clearly, Jack was not in on this little secret, since, as you say, he would never simply have walked away.)
A series of early miscarriages and a difficult pregnancy would explain Charlie's late and solo appearance, certainly. Statistics indicate that most parents who lose a child divorce; I don't think I've seen a study on the continuing viability of the marriage if there are surviving siblings. Charlie's death would be reason enough for their marriage to self destruct.
Though I really like the whole idea of Jack holding back from Sam because he knows he can't provide her with the things she wants. Or, in my head, thinks she wants, because clearly the whole lust for the white picket fence and the yellow kitchen is old data that has since been superseded by jumping through wormholes and blowing up suns. It's kind of hard to imagine her putting aside her workaholic SCIENCE to handle the demands of a small child or two. Though god knows women do.
Also, I'm sure that he timeshared Cassie's dog, on no evidence.
It's really annoying that we don't have even a strong HINT in one direction or another, but considering what happened when TPTB decided to flesh out a character's past (Cameron Mitchell's High School Reunion, I'm looking at you) it may be just as well. Whatever we come up with is certainly more fun.
